So I’ve been setting up living walls for about three years now and honestly the first one I did was a complete disaster because I thought I could just nail some planters to the wall and call it a day… yeah no.
The thing nobody tells you is that living walls are basically controlled chaos. You’re fighting gravity, water damage, and the fact that most plants don’t actually want to grow sideways. But when you get it right? It’s absolutely worth it.
The Real Deal About Wall Systems
Okay so there are basically three ways to do this and I’ve tried them all in my own apartment and various client spaces.
First option is the modular panel system. These are the pre-made pockets or grids you mount to your wall. I used the Florafelt system in my studio and it works but installation was… let me just say I watched the tutorial video four times and still mounted the first panel crooked. The felt pockets hold moisture really well which is great for the plants but you NEED a proper backing board because I learned the hard way that drywall gets spongy.
Second is the freestanding frame approach. This is honestly where I tell most people to start because you’re not committed to drilling into your landlord’s wall or dealing with potential water damage. I have this metal grid frame from a local metalworker that leans against my bedroom wall and it holds about 40 small pots. Way more forgiving.
Third option is DIY pallet walls or those wooden frame systems. My friend Sarah made one from an actual shipping pallet and landscaping fabric and it looked amazing for like six months until the wood started rotting from the moisture. So if you go this route use cedar or treat the wood properly.
The Irrigation Situation
This is where it gets real. You can hand water but let me tell you I tried that for exactly two weeks before I was over it. Climbing on a step stool twice a week to water 50 plants while water drips down your arm and onto your floor is not sustainable.
I installed a drip irrigation system and it changed everything. Got mine from DripWorks and spent probably $150 on tubing, emitters, and a timer. The timer was the key piece because I’m definitely the person who forgets to water until plants are crunchy.
The setup was annoying gonna be honest. You need a water source nearby which meant I had to run a line from my bathroom sink using one of those adapter things. My cat kept trying to bite the tubing during installation which added an extra hour to the process. But now it runs automatically every three days for 15 minutes and I just check moisture levels once a week.
Some people swear by the recirculating systems where water collects at the bottom and pumps back to the top but I haven’t tried that yet. Seems like more maintenance with the pump potentially failing.
Drainage Is Not Optional
Oh and another thing – you absolutely need to think about drainage before you start. I see so many beautiful living wall photos online and I’m like cool but where is the water going.
My first attempt I used a plastic sheet behind the plants to protect the wall which was smart but then I didn’t put a catch tray at the bottom which was very not smart. Water just pooled on my floor. Now I use a long metal tray from a commercial kitchen supply store that catches everything.
If you’re doing the pocket system some of them have built-in drainage layers which is clutch. The water seeps through and you can direct it to a collection point. Just make sure you’re actually emptying that collection point because stagnant water gets gross fast.
Plant Selection Because Not Everything Works
Okay so this is where I made my biggest mistakes. I wanted a lush tropical vibe so I picked a bunch of plants I liked without thinking about whether they’d actually survive vertical.
Plants that have worked amazing for me:
- Pothos in all varieties – they don’t care about anything and grow like crazy
- Philodendron varieties especially the heartleaf ones
- Ferns but only if you can keep humidity up
- Peperomia which I wasn’t expecting to love but they’re perfect little clumps
- String of pearls and other trailing succulents for lower sections
- Spider plants because they’re indestructible
- Nerve plants for color but they’re dramatic about water
Plants that failed miserably:
- Most succulents except the trailing ones – they want way less water than everything else
- Herbs which everyone tries but they need so much light and constant harvesting
- Peace lilies got too heavy and floppy
- Anything that grows really tall obviously
The trick is grouping plants with similar water and light needs. I learned this after killing an entire section because I mixed high-water ferns with drought-tolerant succulents on the same irrigation zone.
The Light Problem
Unless your wall gets direct sun from a huge window you’re gonna need grow lights. I resisted this for so long because I thought it would look weird but modern LED strips are actually pretty discrete.
I use the Barrina T8 LED strips mounted on the ceiling pointed at the wall. Got a six-pack on Amazon for like $80. They’re on a timer to run 12 hours a day. My electric bill went up maybe $8 a month which is whatever.
Wait I forgot to mention – measure your light levels first with one of those cheap lux meter apps on your phone. Most tropical plants want at least 1000-2000 foot-candles. My wall was getting maybe 200 from ambient room light so yeah grow lights were mandatory not optional.
Positioning the lights
Mount them about 6-12 inches from the plants. Too far and they don’t do anything. Too close and you can get leaf burn. I started at 12 inches and moved them closer over a few weeks while watching the plants.
Some people do spotlights instead of strips which works but you get uneven coverage. The strips give me consistent light across the whole 8-foot wall section.
Maintenance Reality Check
Okay so funny story – I told my first client that living walls were low maintenance and she literally laughed at me six months later. They’re lower maintenance than you’d think but not zero.
Weekly tasks:
- Check soil moisture in a few spots
- Look for pests especially spider mites
- Remove dead leaves
- Check irrigation emitters aren’t clogged
Monthly tasks:
- Fertilize with diluted liquid fertilizer through the irrigation system
- Trim overgrown plants
- Rotate or replace any struggling plants
- Clean the drainage tray
Every few months:
- Flush the irrigation lines
- Check for any moisture damage on the wall behind
- Replace potting mix in any pockets that have compacted
The fertilizer thing is important because potting mix doesn’t have infinite nutrients. I use a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter strength every time I water rather than full strength monthly. Easier to remember and less risk of burning roots.
Dealing With Pests
This is gonna sound weird but the vertical orientation actually helps with some pests. Fungus gnats are less of an issue because the soil dries out better than in regular pots.
Spider mites though… they love living walls. Something about the humidity and dense planting. I spray with neem oil solution monthly as prevention. When I do get an infestation I remove the affected plant immediately before it spreads.
Had aphids once on some herbs I tried growing and just pulled all the herbs out. Not worth fighting it when you have 50 other plants in close proximity.
The Cost Breakdown Nobody Talks About
Let me give you real numbers from my 8-foot by 4-foot wall:
- Modular panels or frame: $200-400
- Plants (started with 50): $200 if you buy small ones
- Potting mix: $40
- Irrigation setup: $150
- Grow lights: $80
- Mounting hardware and waterproofing: $60
- Drainage tray: $35
So you’re looking at $750-950 to start. Then maybe $20/month in replacement plants, fertilizer, and electricity.
You can definitely do it cheaper with a DIY frame and hand watering but factor in your time cost. I was spending like 45 minutes twice a week watering before I automated it.
Installation Tips From My Mistakes
Find the studs. Seriously these things get heavy when wet. I used toggle bolts on my first wall and one section pulled out of the drywall during a party which was super embarrassing.
Install a waterproof barrier. I use pond liner material cut to size behind the whole installation. It’s ugly but it’s behind the plants so who cares.
Mount everything level. I didn’t do this on my first attempt and all the water drained to one side creating a dry zone and a swamp zone.
Leave access space. You need to be able to reach behind to check for moisture damage and access the irrigation connections. I mounted mine on a French cleat system so I can actually take the whole thing down if needed.
The Weight Issue
A fully watered living wall section is shockingly heavy. Like my 4×8 section is probably 150+ pounds when saturated. Make sure your wall can handle it. I consulted with a contractor before doing my big installation because I wasn’t sure if my apartment wall could take it.
For renters maybe stick with the freestanding frame option or do a smaller wall-mounted section like 2×2 feet.
Seasonal Changes
My wall looks completely different in winter versus summer even though it’s indoors. The plants grow slower, some go semi-dormant, and I had to adjust my watering schedule.
Winter: irrigation runs every 4 days instead of 3, grow lights on full time because shorter days
Summer: back to every 3 days, sometimes supplemented the humidity with a small humidifier because AC dries everything out
I lost a bunch of ferns my first winter because I didn’t reduce watering frequency and they got root rot. Now I actually check soil moisture instead of just running on a timer blindly.
Quick Troubleshooting
Yellow leaves on lower plants usually means overwatering or not enough light reaching bottom sections
Crispy brown edges typically underwatering or low humidity
Leggy growth means insufficient light even with grow lights – might need to add more or position closer
Algae growth on the surface means too much moisture and light hitting the soil – I add a thin layer of moss on top which looks intentional and prevents algae
Mold on the wall behind means your waterproofing failed and you need to address that immediately before it becomes a bigger problem
The whole section wilting at once probably means irrigation failure – check that the timer is working and lines aren’t clogged
Alternative Approaches
If the full living wall thing seems too intense there are halfway options. I have a client who just mounted a bunch of individual wall planters in a grid pattern. Each one is separate so you can water individually and swap plants easily. Less dramatic impact but way more forgiving.
Another option is the preserved moss walls which aren’t actually living but look amazing and need zero maintenance. I did one in a windowless bathroom and it’s held up for two years. Not the same as real plants but sometimes that’s the right call.
Air plant walls are also a thing where you attach tillandsias to a backing board. You just mist them or soak them weekly. I haven’t done a full wall of these but I’ve seen some cool installations.
Living walls aren’t for everyone and that’s fine. They require commitment and some trial and error. But if you’re willing to put in the setup work and stay on top of basic maintenance they’re honestly one of the coolest things you can do with an interior space. Mine makes me happy every single day even when I’m pulling out dead leaves or dealing with a clogged emitter.
Just start small maybe. Do a 2×2 section first and see how you handle it before committing to a whole wall situation.
