Clay Wall Art: Ceramic Pottery Sculptural Relief

So I’ve been working with clay wall art for like three years now and honestly it’s one of those things that looks way more intimidating than it actually is. Let me just dump everything I know because I literally just finished installing a relief piece in a client’s dining room yesterday and I’m still finding clay dust under my nails.

Getting Started With the Actual Clay

Okay so first thing, you need to pick your clay type and this is where everyone gets confused. I use earthenware for most wall pieces because it’s forgiving and fires at lower temps. Stoneware is stronger but you need a kiln that goes hotter and honestly for wall art you don’t need that kind of durability unless you’re putting it outside maybe?

Air-dry clay is gonna sound like the easy option but hold on. I tried this when I first started because my kiln access was limited and the pieces just… they’re not as durable. They work for small decorative stuff but anything with real sculptural depth will crack on you. I had this whole geometric relief thing crack right down the middle after two months on my own wall. So embarrassing.

For sculptural relief specifically, I mix my own body sometimes. Like 70% stoneware, 30% earthenware with some grog thrown in. The grog (it’s just pre-fired clay that’s been ground up) gives you texture and prevents warping when you’re building up thickness. Which you will be doing a lot with relief work.

Tools You Actually Need vs What People Tell You to Buy

Every tutorial is like “you need 47 different loop tools” and that’s just not true. Here’s what I actually reach for:

  • A wooden rolling pin (not your kitchen one unless you want a divorce or whatever)
  • Two wire tools, one loop one ribbon
  • A metal kidney rib
  • Sponges, the cheap kind from the hardware store
  • A needle tool which is literally just a needle stuck in a cork
  • Plastic wrap, so much plastic wrap

Oh and another thing, get a canvas drop cloth to work on, not plastic. The canvas absorbs moisture evenly and your slab won’t warp as much. I learned this from a pottery instructor who was like 70 and had been doing this since the actual 1960s.

Building the Relief Structure

So the technique I use most is slab building with additive elements. You roll out your base slab maybe half an inch thick, depends on how big you’re going. I did a 24×36 piece last month and went with 3/4 inch because anything thinner felt flimsy when I was handling it.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about relief work, you have to build it in layers and let each layer firm up to leather hard before adding the next. Otherwise everything just smooshes together and you lose all your dimension. I usually work on 2-3 pieces at once so I’m not just sitting around waiting.

For attaching elements you gotta score and slip, yeah yeah everyone says this but actually DO IT. I got lazy once on what I thought was gonna be a quick project and half the decorative elements fell off during firing. Had to tell the client there was a “kiln incident” which wasn’t technically a lie.

Slip is just clay mixed with water until it’s like heavy cream consistency. Score both surfaces with a fork or that needle tool, paint on the slip, press together firmly. Wait I forgot to mention, if you’re attaching something with significant weight or projection, add a small coil behind it as a support. Game changer for pieces that stick out more than an inch or so.

Texture Techniques That Actually Look Good

Okay so funny story, my best texture tool is this random lace I found at a thrift store. You press fabric, leaves, literally whatever into the clay and it creates these insane patterns. I’ve used:

  • Bubble wrap for geometric texture
  • Tree bark (collected from my backyard while my dog thought I was insane)
  • Those mesh produce bags
  • Old jewelry for印prints
  • Corrugated cardboard

For carved texture I use loop tools but also, and this is gonna sound weird but, those clay shapers that are technically for pottery smoothing? They’re perfect for creating flowing organic lines in relief work. Way better control than regular carving tools.

The Drying Process Is Where Everything Goes Wrong

Listen to me about this because I’ve cracked more pieces during drying than I care to admit. Relief work dries unevenly because you’ve got different thicknesses all over the place. The thin parts dry first, they shrink, they pull away from the thick parts, everything cracks.

Solution: plastic wrap everything and dry it SLOW. Like painfully slow. I wrap pieces loosely in plastic and let them dry for a week minimum, sometimes two for bigger pieces. Every day or so I unwrap, check for wet spots, rotate the piece, wrap it back up.

If you see cracks forming during drying you can sometimes save it. Mix up some thick slip, work it into the crack with your finger, smooth it over. Not gonna lie though, sometimes the piece is just done. I had this wave pattern relief that cracked in five places and I just recycled the clay and started over.

Firing Considerations for Wall Pieces

Most sculptural relief gets bisque fired first around cone 04, then glaze fired at whatever temp your glaze needs. But here’s what’s tricky with wall art, you need to plan your hanging system BEFORE firing.

I drill holes for hanging wire while the clay is leather hard. Two holes near the top, angled slightly inward so the wire sits flush. Some people do the wire channel thing where you carve a groove in the back but I find that weakens the structure too much.

For really large pieces, I embed wire loops right into the back. Like you take heavy gauge wire, make loops, press them into the back of the slab before it dries. They fire right in and give you super strong hanging points. My client canceled last week so I spent an hour comparing different wire gauges and 14-gauge is the sweet spot.

Also consider weight distribution. Relief pieces are heavier on one side usually, so your hanging points need to account for that. I do test hangs before the final install using the same type of wall anchors I’ll use in the actual space.

Glazing Relief Work

This is where it gets fun but also complicated. Glaze runs, it pools, it does weird things on vertical and horizontal surfaces. For relief work I usually do one of three approaches:

Option 1: Single glaze color, usually a satin or matte finish. This emphasizes the shadows and dimension without adding visual complexity. I love a good white or cream for this, super architectural.

Option 2: Contrasting glazes on different depth levels. Like maybe the recessed areas are dark and the raised areas are light. You have to be really careful with application though, use a brush not dipping.

Option 3: Underglazes for detail work, clear glaze over everything. This gives you the most control. I sketch designs with underglaze pencils, paint with underglaze, then coat the whole thing in clear. The dimensional aspects show through the color.

Oh and wax resist is your friend. If you want certain areas to stay matte or unglazed, brush on wax resist before glazing. It burns off in the firing but protects those areas. I use this for subtle contrast all the time.

Design Approaches That Work

Geometric patterns are probably the easiest starting point. Hexagons, triangles, repeated linear elements. You can create depth by layering same-shape elements at different heights. I did this whole honeycomb piece where each hexagon was slightly offset in depth and the shadows created this amazing pattern that changed throughout the day as the light moved.

Organic flowing designs are harder but more forgiving of imperfections somehow? Like if a leaf shape is slightly asymmetrical that just reads as natural. I’m working on a wave series right now, very repetitive flowing lines that build up in layers. It’s meditation basically, very repetitive.

Negative space is underutilized in relief work. Instead of adding elements, you can carve away from a thick slab to create recessed designs. The raised areas become the background and the carved areas create the pattern. This technique is actually easier structurally because everything stays the same thickness mostly.

Installation Without Destroying Your Walls

Okay so you’ve made this beautiful piece and now you gotta hang it without it crashing down at 3am. Weight is the main issue. A 24×24 relief piece can easily weigh 15-20 pounds.

For drywall you absolutely need to hit studs or use heavy-duty anchors. I use toggle bolts rated for like 50 pounds minimum. Overkill? Maybe, but I sleep better. Find the studs with a proper stud finder, not the knocking method because that’s how you end up with holes everywhere.

For plaster walls (common in older buildings) I use molly bolts. The installation is slightly more involved but they distribute weight really well. You drill the hole, tap in the molly, then tighten the screw which expands the anchor behind the wall.

Picture hanging wire is what I use to connect the piece to the wall mount. Get the braided steel kind rated for way more weight than your piece actually is. I make a twisted loop through the embedded wire or drilled holes, then hang that on heavy duty hooks.

Level everything obviously but also step back and check how it looks from different angles in the room. I’ve had pieces that were perfectly level but looked tilted from the main viewing angle because of ceiling slopes or other visual elements. Sometimes you have to hang something slightly off-level to make it look right.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Warping during drying: Usually means it dried too fast or unevenly. Next time, slower drying, more plastic wrap, rotate the piece more often.

Elements falling off during firing: Not enough slip, not enough scoring, or the attachment points were too small. Bigger contact surface area next time.

Glaze crawling or bare spots: Could be dust on bisqueware before glazing, could be oils from your hands, could be incompatible glaze and clay body. Always wipe bisque with damp sponge before glazing.

Cracks appearing after installation: This happened to me once and it was because the piece was still slightly damp when I fired it. Moisture trapped in thick areas turned to steam and created internal stress fractures that showed up later. Make sure everything is bone dry before firing, like multiple days of open air drying after you think it’s ready.

Wait I forgot to mention, if you’re making multiple pieces for like a series or installation, work on them all at the same time with clay from the same batch. Different clay batches can have slightly different shrinkage rates and your pieces won’t match up properly otherwise.

The whole process from start to installed piece usually takes me 2-3 weeks per artwork. That’s working casually though, not production mode. If you’re doing this professionally you gotta factor in all that time, which honestly most people don’t and then they undercharge themselves massively.

Also keep test tiles of every glaze combination you try, with notes about clay body, firing temp, all that. I have like 200 test tiles at this point and I reference them constantly. Saves so much time and prevents expensive mistakes on actual pieces.

One more thing, photograph your work in progress. Not just for social media or whatever, but because sometimes you’ll do something accidentally that looks amazing and you’ll want to replicate it later. I have this whole phone folder of texture experiments and technique notes that’s honestly more valuable than any class I’ve taken.
